Gutter Guards Aren’t “Set It and Forget It” — Here’s Proof

A lot of homeowners install gutter guards and assume that’s the end of the story: no more cleaning, no more ladders, no more worrying about it. We get why. But on a recent job, we found proof that “guarded” doesn’t mean “maintenance-free.”

What Happened

The homeowner called us because they could see something was off from the ground: the gutter guard along one section of roofline looked pushed up, a screw holding it down had snapped, and bits of greenery and plant debris were falling off the edge of the roof. That’s usually a sign of a clog, but this time it was something else.

When we got up on the ladder, we found a full bird’s nest built underneath the gutter guard, inside the gutter itself.

Why Most Nests Never Get Noticed

Here’s the part that surprised us, and probably will surprise you too: most nests like this build up completely out of sight. Gutter guards are designed to sit close to the gutter, so unless a nest gets big enough to physically push the guard up and break its hardware, you’d have no way of knowing it’s there. This one only became visible from the ground because it had gotten that far: large enough to lift the guard and spill debris over the edge.

That’s the real warning sign to know: if you notice a gutter guard that looks warped, lifted, or has broken screws or clips, or you’re seeing plant material or debris coming over the top of a “protected” gutter, don’t wait. Something’s built up underneath that shouldn’t be there.

What We Did

Removed the nest, cleared out everything else that had collected in the gutter, and gave the whole section a polish before buttoning it back up.

The Bigger Takeaway

Gutter guards cut down on the leaves and big debris, but they don’t stop birds, seeds, or the smaller stuff that gets through, and they definitely don’t stop nature from finding a cozy spot to build a home. If you have gutter guards and it’s been a while since anyone’s actually looked underneath them, that’s worth putting on the calendar.
