The difference comes down to what’s actually landing on the glass, and how much of it.
Why Do New-Construction and Farm-Adjacent Homes Get Dirtier Faster?
That tracks with what we see on roofs around Utah County. New-construction areas kick up fine dirt and debris from ongoing grading and building work nearby, while homes near farmland pick up windblown soil and pollen on top of it. Combine that with Utah’s dry summers and windy stretches, and panels in these areas build up a heavier film than homes in older, more established neighborhoods, even though everyone’s getting the same ~222+ sunny days a year to lose output on.
Does Every Dusty Climate Lose the Same Amount of Output?
Not necessarily. Worth noting: not every dusty environment behaves the same way. A UC San Diego study found panels in drought-condition California lost only about 7.4% efficiency after 145 days uncleaned, or roughly 0.05% a day. Location and dust type matter more than a single blanket number.
